This four-bedroom, two-bath house is listed for $2,600 a month.

If you want to test out living in a smaller city, Syracuse, New York, is a good option because it’s considered the most affordable city in the Northeast for renters with an average monthly rent of $1,261, according to a recent survey.

You won’t find the same broad array of cultural institutions in New York State’s fifth-most populous city as you would in New York City, but there is still lots to do. You can get a dose of history at The Erie Canal Museum, check out the exhibits at Syracuse University Art Museum and Everson Museum of Art, and get fresh air at parks like Thornden Park. There’s also plenty of local restaurants, shopping districts, and annual events like The Great New York State Fair. And of course, it’s home to Syracuse University and other colleges like SUNY Upstate Medical University.

When it comes to renting a place here, you can rent a house for less than what most apartments rent for in NYC. You can also find many apartments on the market if you don’t need an entire house. There are places within the city limits and houses farther out in more suburban areas.
