Here are 5 North Fork houses for sale if you want to live near water

This five-bedroom, five-bath waterfront house in Laurel is asking $1,900,000.


The North Fork—the 30-mile long peninsula on the East End of Long Island—is known for its farms, beaches, and vineyards. It’s also known for a low-key vibe—it lacks the social scene you’ll find in the Hamptons, located on the South Fork—and for many New Yorkers, that’s a good thing. 

Waterfront real estate is also less expensive on the North Fork, where the median sales price of $608,425 is considerably lower than what you find on the South Fork ($999,000). Keep in mind if you're planning to go house hunting, you'll likely have more competition this year. That's because when NYC schools shut down in March, many New Yorkers decamped to the East End, getting a jump on the summer rental season—and some may not plan to return to NYC. They're in good position to launch a search for a house to buy.

There’s lots to do in the North Fork, especially for the outdoorsy types. Surrounded by the Peconic and Gardiner bays and the Long Island Sound, you’ll find beaches with access to calm waters for swimming and boating. Other destinations include Orient State Park, Sang Lee Farmsmany farm stands, and over 30 vineyards including Sparkling Pointe.
